The Alpina series has long been the benchmark in the lightweight EN-C category. This is thanks to its class-leading performance and easy, comfortable handling. The Ozone Alpina 5 represents the biggest performance gain in this series to date.
Lightweight with sporty performance.
The Ozone Alpina 5 is more than a kilo lighter than the Delta 5 and 500 grams lighter than its predecessor, the Alpina 4. And it's not just lighter, it's much lighter. The reduced sail weight translates into improved handling and performance thanks to lower inertia, resulting in a really crisp, agile feel, more sensitivity when climbing, and better behavior when collapsing. Above all, the Ozone Alpina 5 is of course also more comfortable to carry.
Compared to the Alpina 4, the Ozone Alpina 5 has a massive advantage of +12 cm/s sink rate during full-speed gliding. In calm air, this results in a gain of an entire canopy in altitude every minute. In turbulence, the altitude gain is even greater, as the Ozone Alpina 5 cuts through turbulence with gusto – just like a competition wing. At maximum speed, the Ozone Alpina 5 is 3 km/h ahead and flies away from the Alpina 4 in accelerated flight.
Intuitive and efficient control of the angle of attack, an improved wing design, and an optimized internal structure make the Ozone Alpina 5 an XC glider in turbulence. Its structure is the most robust we have ever built. Even in aggressive turbulence, the profile remains undisturbed, retaining its shape and efficiency without any loss of performance due to deformation at the wing tip.
The new Ozone Active Control Restraints ("ACR System"), which we have adopted from the Mantra series, allow full control of the angle of attack across the entire speed range without deforming the profile chambers. This ACR system acts on the B and C lines, allowing 2-line control with the comfort of a 3-line design.
This Ozone Alpina 5 exhibits the best behavior to date. It is very collapse-resistant, even at full speed in turbulence. Its behavior after a collapse is the mildest in the Alpina series. We were able to achieve this by keeping the aspect ratio relatively low, improving the structure and line architecture, and optimizing the wing twist. Extensive testing has shown a slight tendency to overshoot or rotate after a side collapse, but no shock-like refilling behavior. The Ozone Alpina 5's behavior in front collapses is excellent, and it reopens immediately.
Thanks to the Ozone SharkNose profile, the wing is resistant to spins and stalls and can be flown safely at low speeds, making top landings or landings in a tight area easy for a wing of its class.
Compared to the Alpina 4, the handling has improved enormously. The brakes work linearly – precisely in the first range and effectively in the second. It is easy to adjust the bank angle and place the wing exactly where you want it – in the center of the thermal. A strong wing structure and high sail cohesion ensure very coordinated rolling/pitching and an agile, exciting feeling that is simply fun.
The Ozone Alpina 5 is suitable for intermediate and experienced pilots who fly 70-100 hours per year and have SIV experience. Thanks to its easy handling and high level of passive safety, it is also suitable for pilots who want to work their way up from a lower category. Very experienced pilots who want to fly with a larger safety margin will find the Ozone Alpina 5 to be a good XC tool that delivers best-in-class performance.
